New York Giants: Beefed up secondary will help one unit excel in 2020
Having a bad high school can be a terrible thing for the career of passing defense. The New York Giants experienced it in 2019 when high school saw a 66.4% completion rate and 30 TDs in total. They also recorded just 36 sacks, which placed 21st in the NFL. They were below par in almost every category and the 2020 offseason was supposed to bolster defense production.
Last year, the defense was dotted with rookies and inexperienced players. This played a significant role in his demotion and demise.

New York Giants rookie appearances in high school (2019):
- Corey Ballantine: 13 appearances, two starts.
- Julian Love: 15 appearances, five entry
- DeAndre Baker: 16 appearances, 15 starts
The Giants have made some drastic changes to their high school this offseason, signing former Carolina Panther James Bradberry, Logan Ryan, and selecting Darnay Holmes and Xavier McKinney. The onboarding of new players should make a significant difference in the future and hopefully a positive one.
Bradberry is an improvement over Janoris Jenkins, who joined the New Orleans Saints at the end of the 2019 season. Jabrill Peppers has established himself with solid security and has made huge strides in development. Holmes is an improvement on the slot machine position where the Giants were currently rotating Grant Haley and others. It would be remiss not to mention Julian Love, who scored safety and corner repeats in 2019, becoming a solid utility player able to connect in multiple positions.
The new high school planned:
- CB1: James Bradberry
- CB2: Logan Ryan
- SS: Jabrill peppers
- FS: Julian Love
- Slot machines: Darnay Holmes
Having a strong high school is a priority in the NFL because it can help players succeed in their assignments. There are blanket bags, which are a bag due to its large blanket.
With the inside defensive line going to see games together in 2020, we should expect an increased inefficiency.
Defensive line/projected starting pass:
ROLB: Markus Golden / Oshane Ximines
- DL: Leonard Williams
- DL: Dalvin Tomlinson
- DL: Dexter Lawrence
- LOLB: Kyler Fackrell / Lorenzo Carter
The Giants brought in Kyler Fackrell and retained Markus Golden, which should help boost the unit’s production. A year of experience with Leonard Williams, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Dexter Lawrence is also beneficial.
Having a solid secondary that can handle the cover will give them more time to reach the quarterback. Last year having a rookie squad was not ideal and then hurt defense at all levels. Logan Ryan’s signing is very important and his versatility has proven to be influential.
The New York Giants became a better team on Monday, and the passing run will only benefit from the secondary build. For more information Click Here.
