The RetroBeat — Warcraft III: Reforged looks to balance the old with the new

New games like Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 dominated headlines at this year’s BlizzCon, but Blizzard Entertainment is also working on a project with a more retro vibe: Warcraft III: Reforged.

This remake of the classic 2002 real-time strategy game was a big announcement at last year’s show. This time, Reforged took a back seat. It’s just started its beta phase, so people are playing it now.

Nevertheless, Reforged had a presence at BlizzCon, and I interviewed with production director Kaeo Milker and senior animator Keith Sizemore. I asked them about the challenge of reviving a classic for

Take-Two: The Outer Worlds is ‘outperforming expectations’

Publisher Take-Two Interactive says that it is happy with the launch of The Outer Worlds. Take-Two subsidiary Private Division published the space role-playing adventure from developer Obsidian on October 25. That put it outside of the company’s Q2 earnings reporting period, but Take-Two said that the game should have a noticeable impact on its Q3 results.

“It’s outperforming our expectations handily,” Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said today on a conference call with investors. “We’re very happy.”

Zelnick went on to say that the company wouldn’t provide any specific numbers because it’s too early.

But in Take-Two’s Q2

Activision Blizzard hits Q3 earnings targets with strong World of Warcraft Classic results

Activision Blizzard reported today that its earnings for the third quarter ended September 30 beat Wall Street’s expectations on both earnings and revenues. The company had a big launch of World of Warcraft Classic during the quarter, and that helped drive the audience much higher in both Asia and the West, the company said.

Activision Blizzard’s core businesses include games like Overwatch, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft on consoles and PC and its Candy Crush mobile games.

“Our third quarter results exceeded our prior outlook for both revenue and earnings per share,” said CEO Bobby Kotick

World of Warcaft Classic drove subscriptions to record growth for a quarter

World of Warcraft Classic has been a big success to Activision Blizzard, with the company revealing today that the retro release has driven subscription numbers to their biggest quarterly increase in history.

Classic came out on August 26. World of Warcraft players pay for the same subscription to have access to the regular game and Classic, which runs servers based on how WoW was before the launch of any expansions. Lots of players, it seems, wanted that old-school WoW experience. We don’t, however, know the exact subscription numbers, as Activision Blizzard has not given that statistic out for years.

Roblox: 60% of teens rarely discuss inappropriate online behavior with parents

60% of teens rarely discuss inappropriate online behavior with parents, according to a study of online behavior by gaming world creator Roblox. That shows there’s a failure to communicate between parents and teens.

San Mateo, California-based Roblox interviewed more than 3,500 parents in the U.S. and 580 teens, and it found a pretty big disconnect. While 93% of parents say they discuss appropriate online behavior with their kids at least “occasionally,” teens disagree, with 60% of them saying they rarely or never have such discussions.

The Digital Civility Survey commissioned by Roblox, a global online entertainment world with

Blizzard president apologizes and takes responsibility for Hearthstone free speech blunder

Blizzard president J. Allen Brack opened the BlizzCon 2019 fan fest with an apology about failing to take the right stand when a Hearthstone player protested China’s crackdown on freedoms in Hong Kong a few weeks ago.

“We did not live up to the high standards that we setup for ourselves,” Brack said. “I am sorry and accept accountability.”

A few weeks ago, Blizzard stepped right into the middle of a fundamental clash of cultures between freedom of speech in the U.S. and censorship in China. I think this issue is only going to become more pronounced over time, whether

Brawl is Magic: The Gathering — Arena’s best mode. Make it permanent

I’ve fallen hard for Magic: The Gathering — Arena. Before 2018, I’d never played Magic (as I’ve detailed before). But now it’s my favorite card game. I’ve spent hours brewing decks, learning the basics of drafting (and getting a few undefeated runs), and even getting into the paper game.

A few months ago, a friend of mine invited me to play Commander, a popular casual format in which you build a singleton deck (one without any duplicate cards, besides basic lands). I had a lot of fun. Highlander decks (that’s a fancier name for singleton) are some

The RetroBeat: Don’t expect much at BlizzCon for World of Warcraft Classic

I’m in charge of reviews at GamesBeat, so this is a pretty busy time of the year for me with all of the holiday releases coming out. Still, I keep pouring hours into World of Warcraft Classic.

I’ve spent about 8 days of in-game time adventuring with my Dwarf Priest, and I’m still not at the max level of 60 (I’m level 54). It feels like I’ve played World of Warcraft Classic a ton, but I still have so much to do. Most of my friends have been level 60 for weeks and been engaging in endgame content, battling
