Take-Two: The Outer Worlds is ‘outperforming expectations’

Publisher Take-Two Interactive says that it is happy with the launch of The Outer Worlds. Take-Two subsidiary Private Division published the space role-playing adventure from developer Obsidian on October 25. That put it outside of the company’s Q2 earnings reporting period, but Take-Two said that the game should have a noticeable impact on its Q3 results.

“It’s outperforming our expectations handily,” Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick said today on a conference call with investors. “We’re very happy.”

Zelnick went on to say that the company wouldn’t provide any specific numbers because it’s too early.

Activision Blizzard hits Q3 earnings targets with strong World of Warcraft Classic results

Activision Blizzard reported today that its earnings for the third quarter ended September 30 beat Wall Street’s expectations on both earnings and revenues. The company had a big launch of World of Warcraft Classic during the quarter, and that helped drive the audience much higher in both Asia and the West, the company said.

Activision Blizzard’s core businesses include games like Overwatch, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft on consoles and PC and its Candy Crush mobile games.

World of Warcaft Classic drove subscriptions to record growth for a quarter

World of Warcraft Classic has been a big success to Activision Blizzard, with the company revealing today that the retro release has driven subscription numbers to their biggest quarterly increase in history.

Classic came out on August 26. World of Warcraft players pay for the same subscription to have access to the regular game and Classic, which runs servers based on how WoW was before the launch of any expansions. Lots of players, it seems, wanted that old-school WoW experience. We don’t, however, know the exact subscription numbers, as Activision Blizzard has not given that statistic out for years.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare outselling Black Ops 4 by healthy margin

Activision Blizzard reported today that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is outselling last year’s Black Ops 4 title by a percentage in the “teens,” the company announced in its earnings report for the third quarter ended September 30.

Modern Warfare shipped on October 25, after the close of the quarter. But Activision earlier said that Infinity Ward’s latest Call of Duty game sold more than $600 million in its first three days of sales.

Disney brings Frozen 2 into VR with Myth: A Frozen Tale short film

Disney’s varied steps into the sprawling world of mixed reality have included everything from complete Star Wars and Wreck It Ralph VR experiences at The Void to animated VR short films such as A Kite’s Tale. Now the company is taking its next step forward in the latter category with Myth: A Frozen Tale, an immersive VR experience that will launch tonight alongside the feature-length movie Frozen 2.

Google launches Skaffold in general availability

In a recent survey of over 5,000 enterprise companies, 58% responded that they were using Kubernetes — the open source container-orchestration system for automating app deployment, scaling, and management — in production, while 42% said they were evaluating it for future use. Investors are missing the point on Roku


On Wednesday Roku announced what by all accounts were positive results for the third quarter. Active accounts were up by nearly 2 million, cresting 32 million; the company beat revenue projections by more than $4 million, hauling in $261 million; and it delivered a loss of 22 cents per share, again beating analyst estimates of a loss of 28 cents. Roku did all of this while driving average revenue per user from $21.06 in the prior quarter to $22.58.
